Initiatives
Five founding lines of effort through which CAELUM seeks to translate prayer, study, formation, and pastoral preparation into credible service.
Initiative I: Prayer for Astronauts, Guardians, and Aerospace Families
Purpose
To foster ordinary, sustainable prayer for those serving in aviation, aerospace, military space, scientific exploration, and related communities.
Current Phase
Developing patronal devotions, prayer intentions, and simple resources that parishes, councils, campus ministries, and families can adopt without burdensome new programming.
First Intended Output
A downloadable CAELUM prayer card and a recurring prayer intention for astronauts, Guardians, chaplains, aerospace personnel, and their families.
Participate
Priests, parish leaders, campus ministers, councils, schools, and families.
Initiative II: Sacramental Readiness Beyond Earth
Purpose
To identify the theological, canonical, pastoral, medical, and technical questions raised by human life in orbital, lunar, and future extraterrestrial environments.
Current Phase
Developing a research agenda and identifying priests, canonists, theologians, liturgists, physicians, engineers, and aerospace professionals who can help frame the questions responsibly.
First Intended Output
An introductory issue brief identifying the principal sacramental and pastoral questions that require review by competent ecclesiastical authorities.
Participate
Clergy, canonists, theologians, physicians, life-support specialists, aerospace engineers.
CAELUM studies and presents questions; it does not determine liturgical discipline, sacramental law, or pastoral jurisdiction.
Initiative III: Catholic Formation for the Spacefaring Age
Purpose
To support Catholics pursuing technical, scientific, military, policy, and professional vocations connected to aerospace and the space domain.
Current Phase
Designing an advisor network, a reading-group model, mentorship opportunities, and a small fellowship concept for practicing Catholic students in mission-aligned fields.
First Intended Output
A founding prospectus for the proposed CAELUM St. Michael Fellowship and a pilot reading list for Catholic students and professionals.
Participate
Catholic academics, engineers, military professionals, scientists, students, prospective mentors.
Scope will follow available counsel and resources. CAELUM would rather complete one credible pilot than announce many programs it cannot sustain.
Initiative IV: Chaplaincy Support and Listening
Purpose
To learn from and support those already providing Catholic pastoral care within military, aviation, aerospace, and space-domain communities.
Current Phase
Listening and relationship-building. CAELUM seeks confidential or non-attributable conversations with chaplains, chaplain candidates, Guardians, service members, aerospace personnel, and military families before proposing anything formal.
First Intended Output
A carefully framed pastoral-needs summary identifying recurring concerns, gaps, and questions for further consultation with competent Church and chaplaincy authorities.
Participate
Chaplains, chaplain candidates, Guardians, service members, military spouses, Catholic personnel in space-related billets.
CAELUM claims no chaplaincy authority and does not speak for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, any diocese, military service, command, or chaplain corps. It seeks to support existing structures.
Initiative V: Publications and Thought Leadership
Purpose
To produce serious Catholic reflection before emerging circumstances force hurried theological, pastoral, ethical, or policy answers.
Current Phase
Developing an editorial agenda, publication standards, an expert-review process, and a sequence of foundational essays and briefs.
First Intended Output
Essays and briefs addressing Catholic universality, sacramental ministry beyond Earth, human dignity, chaplaincy in the space domain, just war, labor, settlement, religious liberty, and Catholic technical vocations.
Participate
Clergy, theologians, canonists, ethicists, historians, engineers, physicians, scientists, editors.
Material touching canon law, sacramental discipline, military chaplaincy, or official Church relationships should be reviewed by appropriately qualified authorities before publication.
Stage of Development
These describe intended work. Each will proceed only as clergy counsel, advisors, collaborators, and resources allow. Nothing here is an existing program, partnership, endorsement, funding commitment, fellowship opening, or official Church initiative unless expressly identified as such.
Help Shape the Founding Work
CAELUM welcomes conversation with clergy, chaplains, canonists, theologians, aerospace professionals, military personnel, engineers, scientists, educators, students, and others willing to contribute experience, counsel, prayer, or subject-matter expertise.
